(Please note: if you are a returning adult student who went back to school after a prior paid or unpaid career, this is a different kind of résumé that requires a combination format resumes.)

Professional Standard

If you’ve been in your specific career field for 1+ years, with or without management experience, your resume needs to highlight your career achievements and qualifications.

Career Change, Tech, Skills

Years ago you would need a special kind of resume which focuses on your skills–called a functional format– if you fit any of the following categories:

• You’ve worn many hats, have expertise in more than one field or functional area (for example, you’ve worked in accounts payable, customer service, sales, and in production, or you’ve worked as a cook, as a machine repair technician, and you’ve run your own business)
• You have had a lot of job changes (more than 3 over 10 years)
• You are in a technical field with many technical skills
• You are re-entering the workforce after doing volunteer or healing work, military service, or being self-employed
• You’re changing careers completely and need to highlight skills that can transfer to your new career path.

Today functional formats are not desirable due to limitations of ATS systems to parse the data correctly. What is needed is a hybrid of a functional and chronological resume. These situations require a bit more complex solving and may take a little longer.
